When Uncle John's house developed a common leak due to a design flaw prevalent in many homes, I immediately flew to Florida with just a carry-on and my roofing boots. The flaw is an area that hinders water flow, typically at a wall corner, leading to water backup around roof flashings, similar to ice damming. The fix involves either replacing the shingles with low-slope roofing suitable for these conditions or widening the restricted area with wood repairs to allow water and debris to pass freely. The leak originated from the corner, causing rot in the lower plywood/sheathing and some structural elements. The repair was challenging since I had to leave my tools behind and work with my uncle's. Plus, materials common in the north were not available in Florida, which meant I had to be inventive, as failure was not an option.
